Commission A: Electromagnetic Metrology

Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) has developed an optically pumped primary frequency standard CRL-O1 collaborating with NIST (Lee, et al., 1999), and achieved the accuracy of 1.5x10-14(Hasegawa, A., et al. 2000). CRL is now developing an atomic fountain type frequency standard (Fukuda et al., 2000b) and related technologies such as atom trapping, laser cooling, and laser stabilization (...

Advances in Quantum Metrology

In classical estimation theory, the central limit theorem implies that the statistical error in a measurement outcome can be reduced by an amount proportional to n by repeating the measures n times and then averaging. Using quantum effects, such as entanglement, it is often possible to do better, decreasing the error by an amount proportional to n. Quantum metrology is the study of those quantu...

Parametrically shielding electromagnetic fields by nonlinear metamaterials.

An analytical theory is developed for parametric interactions in metamaterial multilayer structures with simultaneous nonlinear electronic and magnetic responses and with a near-zero refractive index. We demonstrate theoretically that electromagnetic fields of certain frequencies can be parametrically shielded by a nonlinear left-handed material slab, where the permittivity and permeability are...

Exponentially enhanced quantum metrology.

We show that when a suitable entanglement-generating unitary operator depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, a precision of the order of 2(-N) in estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the precision achievable in classical and in quantum nonentangling strategies.

PolyCond: electromagnetic shielding with conducting polymers

Picture this: your mobile phone is lying on your desk, close to the speaker of your computer system. A few seconds before you receive a call or SMS message on your mobile phone, the speaker makes a buzzing noise. Is this clairvoyance of the speaker? No way. Here, the wire to the speaker acts like an antenna that picks up and amplifies the signal it receives from the mobile phone network. This i...
